Why Fall is the Ultimate Season for NYC (and How to Escape It Up the Hudson)
There is something undeniably magical about autumn in New York City. The air turns crisp, the leaves begin to turn, and suddenly, getting dressed becomes an art form. It’s the season of oversized coats, structured boots, layering your favorite knits, and taking long, aimless walks through the city just to feel that brisk autumn breeze.
But as much as I love NYC in the fall, my absolute favorite thing about this season is leaving it behind - if only for a day or two.
Autumn is prime time to hop on the Metro-North or throw your bags in the car and explore the Hudson Valley. Within an hour or two, you’re surrounded by rolling hills, winding rivers, and the vibrant colors of peak foliage. If you're looking for the ultimate autumn getaway guide, here are my top spots to eat, hike, sip, and shop your way up the Hudson.
1. Sunset Happy Hours at Half Moon (Dobbs Ferry)
If you want breathtaking Hudson River views without traveling far, Dobbs Ferry is an easy, quick ride on the Metro-North. Head straight to Half Moon for happy hour. Sitting right on the water, it boasts one of the absolute best sunset views along the entire Hudson. Even as the days get shorter and the sun dips around 6:45 PM, sitting outside with a glass of wine and watching the sky turn shades of pink and orange over the Palisades is unbeatable. It’s the perfect spot to bring friends for a relaxing late-afternoon bite.
2. Antiquing & Hiking in Cold Spring
Further up the line sits Cold Spring, one of the most charming river towns in New York. It’s the ultimate day trip—you can spend the morning hiking the trails (Breakneck Ridge is nearby for the adventurous) and the afternoon strolling down Main Street to pop into antique shops and cozy cafés. Want to make a weekend out of it? Cold Spring is filled with adorable, historic Bed & Breakfasts where you can spend the night.
3. Trailhead Views & Post-Hike Dining at Harriman
For serious autumn leaf-peeping, you can’t beat Harriman State Park. The hiking trails here take you through dense woodlands painted in deep reds and golds. After working up an appetite on the trail, head into nearby Beacon or Garrison to refuel at The Roundhouse or The Valley Restaurant at The Garrison for a cozy, farm-to-table brunch or early dinner.
4. Sail Under the Autumn Canopy
Taking in the foliage from the water is an absolute must-do during peak season. Hop aboard a scenic Classic Harbor Line Fall Foliage Cruise, where you can sail up the Hudson River, sip a local beer or glass of wine, and marvel at the golden riverbanks.
5. Supporting Women & Local Artists at Goshen Farms
I have a huge soft spot for locally owned farms, especially those that uplift women and artists. Goshen Farms, owned by artist Susan Hillary, is a true gem. Walking around the farm feels like stepping into a creative sanctuary - Susan’s store showcases incredible local goods and artwork from nearby creators.
While you’re there, you can plant, paint, and create your own art. And don't miss the food! There is an incredible mother-daughter Latina team running a food truck right on the farm, serving up some of the most delicious local bites you'll ever taste.
SPECIAL EVENT ALERT: Day of Play (Harvest Edition) - October 4th!
Speaking of Goshen Farms, we are hosting our upcoming Day of Play: Harvest Edition on Sunday, October 4th!
If you’re feeling burnt out by the city grind, entrepreneurship, or daily responsibilities, this is your invitation to reset. We’ll be gathering at Goshen Farms for a full day of:
Grounding Meditation & Yoga & Dance
Hands-in-the-dirt Planting
Wine Tasting & Local Farm Bites
Art Walks & Creative Play
Whether you drive up or grab a seat on our NYC shuttle, come unwind with us and celebrate the harvest season.
6. Wine Stomps at the Oldest Winery in the US
After exploring the farm, make your way to Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville. Known as the oldest continuously operating winery in the United States, autumn is their prime harvest season. On weekends, they host public wine stomps! It’s first-come, first-served, so show up early if you want to get your feet wet and crush some grapes the old-fashioned way.
7. Apple Picking & Distillery Cocktails at Apple Dave's Orchards
Just 15 minutes down the road from Brotherhood Winery sits Apple Dave’s Orchards—the ultimate adult-friendly picking spot. Skip the hyper-commercial crowds and enjoy a relaxed afternoon walking through old-growth apple orchards, picking pumpkins, and lounging by their quiet lake. They have live music on the lawn and an on-site distillery where you can grab craft cocktails, fresh cider, and beers to pair with warm cider donuts.
Whether you’re catching a golden-hour sunset in Dobbs Ferry, stomping grapes in Washingtonville, or joining us for our Day of Play on October 4th, autumn up the Hudson is pure magic. Throw on your favorite fall layers, grab a friend, and head north!
